The White House condemned gun violence after a mass shooting in Birmingham, Alabama left four dead and at least 17 others wounded. Gun Violence Prevention Director Stef Feldman stated that President Biden and Vice President Harris are praying for the families affected by the violence. The White House is coordinating with federal, state, and local officials as investigations into the shooting are ongoing. Feldman emphasized that Americans should not have to live in fear of gun violence and that the country cannot let it become normalized. She also highlighted the more than 400 mass shootings that have occurred this year alone, expressing President Biden’s sentiment that “Enough is enough.”

The shooting took place in the Five Points South area near the University of Alabama at Birmingham, resulting in the deaths of two men and a woman at the scene, with a fourth victim dying at the hospital. Authorities have identified three of the victims as Anitra Holloman, Tahj Booker, and Carlos McCain. The fourth victim, an adult male, remains unidentified pending notification of his family. Police believe the shooting was a targeted incident rather than a random act of violence, with multiple victims caught in the crossfire. Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond stated that it appears to have been a “hit,” suggesting that someone was paid to kill the targeted victim.

During a press conference, Chief Thurmond confirmed that the weapons used were fully automatic and that over 100 shell casings were found at the scene, along with other pieces of evidence. He also indicated that there may have been multiple shooters based on the evidence. Authorities are working to determine the target of the shooting and are reviewing video surveillance footage to gather more information. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin emphasized the importance of taking action to remove the shooters and killers from the streets to prevent future tragedies. As of now, no suspects are in custody, and authorities are urging the public to provide any information that could lead to an arrest.

The community is rallying around the victims and their families, offering heartfelt condolences and support. Mayor Woodfin acknowledged the significant impact the shooting has had on 21 individuals and their families, emphasizing the need for justice and accountability for those responsible. Authorities are working diligently to solve the case and are asking for the public’s cooperation in providing any information that could be helpful in identifying and apprehending the suspects. The White House, along with local and state officials, is committed to addressing gun violence and preventing such senseless tragedies from occurring in the future. The nation is united in mourning the lives lost and seeking justice for the victims of this devastating incident.
