Venezuela has detained three United States citizens, two Spaniards, and a Czech national over an alleged plot to destabilize the South American nation, according to Venezuelan Minister of Interior Diosdado Cabello. These arrests come amidst increased tensions between Venezuela and Western nations, particularly the US and Spain, over disputed Venezuelan election results. President Nicolas Maduro, who has been in power since 2013, won the election, but the opposition claims it was fraudulent and that their candidate had won. During a news conference, Cabello accused the Spanish nationals of having links to Spain’s secret service and planning an assassination. The two were detained in Puerto Ayacucho while taking photographs. In addition to the Spanish nationals, three US citizens and a Czech national were accused of involvement in terrorist acts, including plans to assassinate Maduro and other officials. The US State Department confirmed the detention of a US military member in Venezuela and was aware of reports of additional American citizens being detained, but denied any involvement in an attempt to overthrow Maduro. The US reiterated its support for a democratic solution to the political crisis in Venezuela. Venezuela reciprocated by recalling its ambassador to Spain and summoning the Spanish ambassador after a Spanish minister referred to Maduro’s government as a dictatorship. The decision of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to meet with Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez, who sought exile in Spain due to threats from Maduro’s government, added to the tensions between the two countries.
