A recent poll conducted by The Washington Post-Ipsos found that more Black Americans are planning to vote in the upcoming election now that Vice President Kamala Harris has replaced President Biden as the Democratic nominee. The poll revealed that 69% of Black Americans are “absolutely certain” to vote on Election Day, compared to 62% in April. A similar New York Times poll also showed an increase in Black voter participation, with 56% saying they were “almost certain” to vote and an additional 33% saying they were “very likely” to vote.

Harris’ candidacy has had the largest impact on young Black voters, particularly women. The share of Black Americans under 30 who plan to vote has risen by 15 points, reaching 47%. Additionally, intent to vote among Black women under 40 rose by 18 points since April, totaling 57%. Among Black registered voters, 82% say they favor Harris over Trump, while only 12% favor Trump.

The polls also found that Harris holds solid or dominating majority support from Black voters on various issues. However, on the topic of Israel’s war with Hamas, she loses out on a majority, with 49% of Black Americans saying they trust her to handle the issue. On immigration, 55% of Black Americans support Harris, while 19% believe Trump is best to handle the issue. The polling data was gathered from Aug. 23 to Sept. 3, surveying 1,083 Black Americans with a margin of error of 3.2%.

With the presidential debate between Harris and Trump looming, their campaigns have already laid the groundwork for potential lines of attack. Trump is expected to highlight Harris’ role in the 2021 withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, which resulted in the deaths of 13 soldiers in a suicide bombing. Some relatives of those soldiers have endorsed Trump and criticized Harris. On the other hand, Harris’ campaign has sought to counter that narrative by presenting a letter from 10 retired generals and admirals affirming that President Biden and Harris did their best under difficult circumstances left by Trump’s administration.

As the election draws closer, the enthusiasm among Black voters appears to be growing, particularly due to Harris’ candidacy. It is evident that Harris has garnered significant support among Black Americans, especially among young voters and women. With the debate between Harris and Trump fast approaching, it will be interesting to see how both candidates continue to address key issues and convince voters of their capabilities and policies. Ultimately, the decision of the Black community in supporting Harris or Trump will have a significant impact on the outcome of the election.
