While preparing to go into the water near Cayos Cochinos, Irmen spotted a piece of debris in the rocks and sand that he immediately recognized as aerospace-related. As an aerospace engineer, he knew it was part of a rocket, specifically the upper cowling that covers the payload during launch and jettisons from the rocket after leaving the Earth’s atmosphere. The debris bore the Arianespace logo, indicating it was likely from an Ariane 5 rocket.
The European Space Agency (ESA) explains that the fairing of the Ariane 5 rocket was designed to protect against aerodynamic, thermal, and acoustic phenomena during launch. After three minutes post-liftoff, when the launcher exited the Earth’s atmosphere, the fairing was no longer needed and was jettisoned.
