The Russian ambassador to the U.S., Anatoly Antonov, believes that the United States will eventually lift all restrictions on the use of weapons supplied to Ukraine. He criticized the current U.S. administration’s behavior, describing it as deceptive and accusing it of laying the groundwork to remove restrictions without much thought. The U.S. has provided Ukraine with over $50 billion in military aid but has limited the use of its weapons to Ukrainian soil and defensive operations.

Antonov stated that serious dialogue with the U.S. would only be possible if it ends its “hostile” policy towards Russia, which includes supporting Ukraine and imposing sanctions on Moscow. He expressed doubts about a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken during the upcoming UN General Assembly session. Antonov also mentioned that Russia has no plans to interfere in the U.S. presidential elections, despite ongoing tensions between the two countries.

The comments by the Russian ambassador reflect the ongoing strain in relations between Russia and the United States, particularly concerning the conflict in Ukraine. The U.S. has been a key supporter of Ukraine in its efforts to defend against Russian aggression, providing significant military aid to the country. However, Russia views this support as a threat to its own interests and believes that the U.S. will eventually remove restrictions on the use of weapons supplied to Ukraine.

Despite the tensions and perceived hostility from the U.S., Russia is calling for a more constructive dialogue to address the issues dividing the two countries. Antonov’s comments suggest that Russia is open to improving relations with the U.S., but only if Washington changes its policies towards Russia and Ukraine. The lack of a scheduled meeting between high-level Russian and U.S. officials indicates the challenges in resolving these longstanding conflicts and the complexities of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The situation between Russia, the U.S., and Ukraine remains precarious, with tensions continuing to simmer and the potential for further escalation. The concerns raised by Antonov highlight the deep-seated mistrust and animosity between Russia and the U.S., as well as the complexities of the conflicts in Ukraine. Moving forward, it will be crucial for both countries to find common ground and work towards de-escalating tensions in order to avoid further instability and conflict in the region.
