Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, a man accused of murdering 42 women, escaped from a Nairobi police station along with 12 others. Described as a “vampire” and a “psychopath” by police, Khalusha was awaiting trial after confessing to the murders. The escape was discovered during a routine check by officers, with the prisoners cutting through wire mesh to flee. The police station is located in an upmarket Nairobi district, home to the United Nations headquarters and several embassies. The Acting Police Inspector General stated that eight officers on duty during the escape are facing disciplinary measures as initial investigations suggested the escape was aided by insiders.

Prior to his escape, Khalusha had confessed to the murders of 42 women over a span of two years, with his wife allegedly being his first victim. The Head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations labeled him as a serial killer with no respect for human life. However, Khalusha’s lawyer claimed he was tortured into making the confession, which was denied by prosecutors. The discovery of ten butchered female bodies in plastic bags at an abandoned quarry in the Nairobi slum of Mukuru raised concerns about police involvement, as the location was just 100 meters from a police station. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights launched an investigation into the case to rule out any possibility of extrajudicial killings.

The escape of Khalusha and the 12 other prisoners prompted a manhunt in Kenya, with police working to track down the fugitives. Authorities are concerned about the potential danger posed by Khalusha, given his history of violence and the number of victims he is accused of murdering. The case has shed light on the shortcomings of the police force in Kenya, which has been criticized for its handling of protests and alleged use of excessive force. The Independent Police Oversight Authority is also investigating potential police involvement or failure to prevent the killings at the Mukuru quarry, where the bodies were found.

Khalusha’s escape has put the authorities on high alert, with efforts being made to locate and apprehend him and the other escaped prisoners. The gravity of his crimes and the brutality of the murders he is accused of committing have heightened concerns about public safety. The case has highlighted the need for improved security measures and oversight within the Kenyan police force to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. The investigation into the Mukuru killings and the allegations of police involvement underscore the importance of holding law enforcement accountable and ensuring justice for the victims and their families. The manhunt for Khalusha and the escaped prisoners is ongoing, with law enforcement agencies working tirelessly to bring them to justice.
