Housing costs in Washington, D.C. were also identified as a significant issue, with the median list price of a home in the metropolitan area standing at $638,000. The study noted that this exorbitant price tag further added to the overall cost of living, making it difficult for many residents to afford housing in the city. Additionally, crime rates in D.C. have been on the rise, with the city recording 274 murders in 2023, the highest number in over two decades. These factors combined have contributed to the decline in Washington, D.C.’s appeal as a place to live.
In addition to Washington, D.C., other major cities such as New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco were also listed among the top 10 most undesirable cities to reside in the United States. Housing costs in Los Angeles were reported to exceed residents’ annual income by approximately $162,000, making it increasingly difficult for individuals to purchase a home in the city. Similarly, cities like Baltimore and Detroit, while more affordable, were hampered by high rates of crime, landing them on the list of least desirable places to live in the country.
Despite the negative rankings of major cities, the study also highlighted some more favorable locations for individuals looking to relocate. Tampa, Florida, emerged as the most desirable city in America to live in, with its year-round warmth, low crime rates, and affordable housing options making it an attractive prospect for many. Charlotte, North Carolina, ranked second on the list, followed by Virginia Beach, Virginia, rounding out the top three. These cities were commended for their overall livability and positive attributes that make them desirable places to call home.
