Mills fell to the ground and eventually finished 18th, while Hay was able to stay on foot and finish in seventh. Spain’s Thierry Ndikumwenayo, Lobalu and the Netherlands’ Mike Foppen fell after being caught in the aftermath. Hay and Mills got into an altercation at the finish line, but both athletes, along with Ndikumwenayo, Lobalu and Foppen, advanced.An additional athlete, Australia’s Stewart McSweyn, made an appeal to the jury and was also advanced to the final.In the second heat, Team USA contender Abdihamid Nur got caught up in the tight pack of runners and fell just before the final leg of the race, crushing his time and qualifying position.
