Mr Loke, Malaysia’s Transport Minister, announced that as of July 31, Malaysia had received close to 60,000 applications for the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) deadline of Oct 1, more than double the number reported as of June 29. However, he noted that 40 per cent of these applications were incomplete, with missing documents such as vehicle insurance certificates, copies of identification cards, and certificates of entitlement. Mr Loke anticipates a further 50,000 VEP applications in the two months leading up to the enforcement deadline.

Emphasizing the approaching deadline, Mr Loke advised Singapore drivers entering Malaysia via the land checkpoints to complete their VEP applications before Oct 1 to avoid any issues. He also mentioned that drivers who had received the VEP tag via post needed to activate them within seven days to avoid expiration. Drivers can reactivate the VEP tag from Aug 2 through the same portal used for the initial registration. Mr Loke stated that Malaysia’s decision to enforce the VEP system is to ensure accountability and prevent suspicious vehicles from entering the country.

Regarding enforcement plans for vehicles entering Malaysia without the VEP, Mr Loke indicated that further details would be shared on Oct 1. Malaysia’s transport ministry previously stated that driving a foreign-registered motor vehicle without a VEP in the country could result in fines of up to RM2,000 (US$438) or jail time of up to six months upon conviction. Mr Loke reiterated that those entering Malaysia without the VEP would be considered in violation of the rules, emphasizing the importance of compliance with the VEP requirements.

In conclusion, Malaysia has seen a significant increase in VEP applications as the Oct 1 deadline approaches, with incomplete applications posing a challenge for processing. It is vital for Singapore drivers entering Malaysia to complete their VEP applications and activate the VEP tag within the required timeframe to avoid penalties. Malaysia’s implementation of the VEP system aims to enhance security and accountability for vehicles entering the country, with strict enforcement measures in place for those who do not comply with the regulations.
