Team USA’s artistic swimmers are known for their stunning routines that involve flips, dives, handstands, and dramatic splashing through the water, all while maintaining a full face of glam and perfectly styled hair. The key to their mesmerizing look lies in waterproof makeup that stays put throughout their performances. Two-time Olympian Anita Alvarez reveals that the secret to their competition makeup is simply finding products that are water-resistant. Weeks before the 2024 Paris Olympics, Alvarez, along with teammates Keana Hunter and Daniella Ramirez, spoke to Vogue about their beauty routines, which turned out to include a surprising secret.

While the focus may often be on their makeup, it is the artistic swimmers’ hair routine that truly sets them apart. Unlike other swimmers who wear caps, artistic swimmers leave their hair exposed as part of the aesthetic. This means that maintaining perfectly styled hair throughout their performances is crucial. Hunter reveals that the secret to their ultra-shiny, helmet-like hair finish is Knox Gelatine, a product commonly found in grocery stores. The team’s signature tight braided bun is styled using hair ties, bobby pins, and hairnets before the gelatin is applied. Once the gelatin dries and hardens, a ‘headpiece’ is added to match their swimsuits, completing the look.

After spending an average of 6 hours in an outdoor, chlorinated pool, the swimmers’ skin and hair take a toll. The combination of exposure to chlorine and prolonged water exposure causes dryness and sensitivity. Ramirez shares that her skin is always dry and sensitive after leaving the pool, emphasizing the importance of post-shower skincare, with Cerave being her go-to product. Alvarez points out that beauty plays a significant role in artistic swimming, as it needs to make an impact on judges and the audience. Their preferred bold black eyeliner and red lipstick look from Makeup Forever is chosen for its durability in the water and ability to withstand emotional moments.

Maintaining the elaborate hair and makeup looks requires precision and attention to detail. Each team member has their own special techniques for achieving the desired aesthetic, but the general process involves a tight braided bun, gelatin application, and strategically placed hair accessories. Alvarez mentions that their coach, Andrea Fuentes, has created a specialized version of the gelatin product that is stronger and more pleasant-smelling than the standard variety found in stores. Removing the gelatin requires a very hot shower, ensuring that all remnants are washed out for the next performance.

Despite the challenges of water exposure and intense performances, Team USA’s artistic swimmers are dedicated to delivering visually impactful routines that showcase their talent and beauty. Alvarez emphasizes the importance of choosing makeup and hairstyle products that can withstand the demands of their sport, allowing them to shine both in and out of the water. The combination of waterproof makeup, intricate hairstyles, and diligent skincare routines ensures that the team presents a polished and captivating appearance throughout their performances. As they continue to captivate audiences with their artistry and athleticism, the artistic swim team remains committed to maintaining their signature look with the help of specialized beauty techniques and products.
