Photographer Chris Whitty recently captured an image of a rare white loon during the bird’s molt at the end of the breeding season. Whitty, an amateur photographer from western Canada, encountered the white loon four years ago while out kayaking in British Columbia. After encountering the white loon again a week later, Whitty went out to the same lake for nine more days but was unable to find it. He speculates that the bird may have been passing through the area on its way to a nesting site, explaining the short duration of their encounters. The loon’s large webbed feet help it steer better underwater, showcasing the bird’s adaptability in different environments.
