John Barnett, a U.S. Navy veteran and retired MTA police officer, has taken on the challenge of running a marathon in all 50 U.S. states to raise awareness for Paws of War, a non-profit organization that helps rescue and train service dogs for veterans. Barnett’s military career ended in 2011 when he was attacked and stabbed in the eye while on duty. Since then, he has been receiving treatment for his injuries and PTSD. After seeing a sign for Paws of War near his home, Barnett sought help from the organization and has since been receiving various services including veteran training for his dogs, counseling, and support from a community of veterans.

Barnett, who has completed over 30 marathons, decided to run for Paws of War to increase awareness and support for the organization. He believes that running for the cause is his way of giving back and helping other first responders and veterans who may be experiencing similar struggles. Despite his own challenges, Barnett is motivated by the opportunity to assist others in need and hopes to make a positive impact through his efforts. Paws of War has helped Barnett significantly and he hopes other veterans and first responders can receive the same level of support that he has.

Running marathons across the country, Barnett’s first race for Paws of War took place in Montana, with subsequent races scheduled in various states. While Barnett has previously participated in the New York City Marathon multiple times, he has found special significance in marathons in Vermont and Maine, where the aroma of pine trees fills the air. As he continues his journey to run in all 50 states, Barnett aims to raise awareness for Paws of War and encourage other veterans and first responders to seek help from organizations like the VA hospital for immediate support.

Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War, commended Barnett’s efforts in supporting the organization’s mission to honor and assist veterans, active military members, and first responders. The organization provides a range of services including the rescue and training of service dogs for independence, adoption of companion animals, and other essential support for those in need. Misseri emphasized the importance of supporting veterans and first responders like Barnett, whose determination to give back and help others can potentially save lives and make a significant difference in their communities.

Through his commitment to running marathons and raising awareness for Paws of War, Barnett hopes to inspire other veterans and first responders to seek help and support from organizations dedicated to assisting those who have served their country. By sharing his own experiences and struggles, Barnett aims to encourage others to reach out for help and access the resources available to them. His dedication to giving back and supporting his fellow heroes exemplifies the spirit of service and resilience that defines the military and first responder communities.
