The government is investing $274 million in hospitals to ensure that they have adequate staff to run effectively. One of these programs is the urgent care services program, which will receive $100 million to divert patients with less serious ailments to a GP after booking an appointment over the phone. This is expected to divert 114,000 patients from emergency rooms. Another program, the single front door program, has been allocated $171.4 million to divert 180,000 patients to virtual consultations with a GP. This program allows patients to describe their symptoms to a triage nurse, who can determine if they are suitable for a virtual consultation, thus avoiding unnecessary hospital visits.
The government has a goal of reducing trips to the hospital by 290,000 each year through these programs. The funding is aimed at providing patients with more convenient and appropriate care options, while also relieving the strain on hospital resources. By investing in these alternative care programs, the government hopes to improve access to healthcare for patients with less serious conditions, such as fevers, mild respiratory illnesses, and infections.
