Apple surprised iPhone 12 users with an unexpected upgrade to wireless charging capabilities in the latest iOS 17.4 release. According to Macworld, this update allows the iPhone 12 to charge much faster with third-party wireless charging pads, a feature previously limited to Apple-authorized devices. This enhancement comes as a welcome surprise to users who can now enjoy the convenience of faster charging without the need for exclusive Apple products.

Wireless charging was initially introduced by Apple in 2017 with the iPhone X and iPhone 8 series. With the launch of the iPhone 12 in 2020, Apple introduced MagSafe, an innovative system that utilizes magnets in both the phone and charging pad to ensure a secure connection. However, there was a limitation where third-party charging pads without MagSafe certification were restricted to a maximum of 7.5W charging speed, compared to the 15W offered by certified Apple products.

The emergence of Qi2, the next generation of wireless charging developed by the Wireless Power Consortium and based on MagSafe technology, has brought about significant improvements in charging capabilities for iPhones. As a member of the consortium, Apple has played a crucial role in defining the specifications for Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile. The iPhone 15 series was the first to be compatible with Qi2, enabling users to enjoy fast 15W charging with any Qi2-certified charging pad from various manufacturers.

Although Apple had previously announced compatibility with Qi2 for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 in the iOS 17.2 update last December, no mention was made for the iPhone 12, the only other iPhone model with MagSafe. Despite the lack of official communication from Apple, Macworld’s tests confirmed that the iPhone 12 is indeed capable of charging at 15W with a Qi2 charger, displaying the 15W-only charging animation during the process. This unexpected enhancement allows users to achieve fast charging speeds on the iPhone 12 with third-party Qi2-certified pads.

The availability of fast charging capabilities on the iPhone 12 through third-party wireless charging pads opens up new opportunities for users to explore more cost-effective charging options. The Anker MagGo Wireless Charger pad, priced at $21.99, can now charge the iPhone 12 as quickly as Apple’s own certified pad, which costs $39. This development not only provides users with more affordable charging solutions but also highlights the potential for future collaborations between Apple and third-party manufacturers to enhance user experience across a broader range of products.

While the upgrade to wireless charging capabilities on the iPhone 12 with the iOS 17.4 release is a welcome improvement, the lack of official announcement from Apple has left many puzzled. The company’s decision to introduce this enhancement without any prior indication reflects its commitment to continuously improving the user experience on its devices. Moving forward, users can expect more surprises and advancements in wireless charging technology as Apple continues to collaborate with industry partners to deliver innovative solutions for its customers.
