Kia is issuing a warning to owners of almost 463,000 of its Telluride SUVs in the United States, advising them to keep their vehicles parked outside and away from buildings due to a potential fire hazard. The issue stems from seat control switches on the front power seats becoming misaligned and stuck, causing a small electric motor that moves the seat to run continuously and overheat. This recall affects 2020 through 2024 Kia Telluride models, which have been extremely popular for the company.
The problem was brought to Kia’s attention in 2022 when a customer reported smoke coming from under their Telluride’s driver seat. Subsequent complaints of a smoke smell from the passenger-side power seat were received in 2023, followed by further reports of issues in the same year. In 2024, a Kia owner reported that the driver’s seat caught fire while they were driving. Fortunately, there have been no accidents or injuries as a result of the problem, according to Kia’s investigation.
Kia has determined that the issue lies with the power seat switches, which can become damaged in a way that causes the motor to overheat. The company will be sending out letters to recalled vehicle owners starting at the end of July, instructing them to bring their SUVs to a Kia dealership for repairs at no cost. Service technicians will install reinforcements and improved switches to prevent the seats from burning. Owners who suspect their Telluride may be affected can also contact Kia customer service for assistance.
In addition to this recent recall, Kia previously recalled over 400,000 Telluride SUVs earlier in the year for a separate issue that could result in the vehicles rolling away while in park. The company is taking steps to address both problems and ensure the safety of their customers. The Telluride, a spacious SUV with three rows of seats, was specifically designed by Kia to appeal to American consumers and has been in high demand since its release. Built in Georgia and designed in California, the Telluride has received positive reviews and accolades for its features and performance.
