University of Michigan researchers are utilizing AI technology to decipher and understand the meanings behind animal vocalizations, specifically a dog’s bark. By repurposing models originally trained on human speech, the researchers were able to identify whether a dog’s bark is playful or aggressive, as well as gather information about the dog’s age, breed, and sex. The collaboration with Mexico’s National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics (INAOE) in Puebla yielded promising results, with AI models trained on human speech serving as a foundation for training new systems targeting animal communication. The findings were presented at the Joint International Conference on Computational Linguistics, Language Resources, and Evaluation, shedding light on the potential of AI to revolutionize our understanding of animal communication.

One of the challenges in developing AI models that analyze animal vocalizations is the scarcity of publicly available data. While human speech data is easily accessible, collecting animal vocalizations, particularly from wild animals, presents logistical difficulties. The researchers overcame this obstacle by adapting an existing model designed for human speech analysis, enabling them to tap into advanced speech processing technology. By leveraging this technology, the researchers sought to unlock the complexities of dog barks and advance the field of animal communication analysis, ultimately enhancing our understanding of the animal kingdom.

The research team utilized a dataset of dog vocalizations captured from 74 dogs of varying breeds, ages, and sexes in different contexts. With the assistance of Humberto Pérez-Espinosa from INAOE, the team collected the data, which U-M doctoral student Artem Abzaliev then used to modify a machine-learning model called Wav2Vec2. Originally trained on human speech data, Wav2Vec2 was reconfigured to interpret dog barks and generate representations of the acoustic data collected. The model successfully completed four classification tasks, outperforming other models trained specifically on dog bark data and achieving accuracy rates of up to 70%.

By demonstrating the effectiveness of incorporating human speech models into the analysis of animal communication, the researchers have paved the way for new possibilities in various fields, including biology and animal behavior. Beyond scientific implications, this research has practical implications for animal welfare, as it can help humans better understand and respond to the emotional and physical needs of dogs. This understanding could significantly enhance the care provided to dogs and prevent potentially dangerous situations by enabling humans to accurately interpret and act on the signals conveyed through dog vocalizations.
