Social Security recipients who are usually paid in the second week of the month may not be paid until next week due to changes in the payment schedule. The Social Security Administration distributes benefits to retired Americans, individuals with disabilities, and surviving family members of deceased claimants. As there are several categories of payments and a vast number of payees, not everyone is paid on the same date each month. This month, retirees whose birthdays fall between the first and 10th of any month are set to receive their payment in the third week of the month, on June 12.

The change in the payment schedule for some recipients is not unusual and is part of the regular payment cycle. In 2024, similar third-week payments are scheduled for August and November. Meanwhile, another change for June applies to Supplemental Security Income recipients, who usually receive payments on the first of every month. However, June’s payment was made a day early on May 31, so recipients received two payments last month. This early payment was made to avoid putting recipients at a financial disadvantage and does not mean they received extra benefits. Recipients do not need to report the second payment.

Beneficiaries who receive only SSI are typically paid on the same day as retirement claimants. However, this month, retirees who have been claiming benefits since before May 1997 or who receive both SSI and retirement benefits are expected to receive their payments on June 3. The full schedule of June 2024 payments includes SSI payments on May 31, payments for retirees with birthdays between the 1st and 10th on June 12, payments for birthdays between the 11th and 20th on June 18, and payments for birthdays between the 21st and 31st on June 25.

Overall, the changes in the payment schedule for some Social Security recipients in June are part of the regular payment cycle and do not represent an additional benefit for recipients. The Social Security Administration adjusts payment dates to ensure that beneficiaries do not face financial challenges due to weekend disbursement dates. Recipients are encouraged not to report the second payment they received in May, as it was a normal adjustment to the payment schedule to avoid delays in receiving benefits.
