Houseplants are a great addition to any home, offering benefits such as air purification, temperature regulation, and flavor enhancement for cooking. However, caring for houseplants can be challenging, as they require specific conditions to thrive. To help beginners succeed in plant parenthood, experts recommend choosing low-maintenance plants that are hard to kill. Rebecca Sterling from Easyplant and Puneet Sabharwal from Horti shared their picks for the easiest houseplants to care for, as well as common reasons for plant death.

Some of the easiest houseplants to care for include the ZZ plant, known for its hardy nature and tolerance to neglect. Parlor palms are forgiving and thrive with adequate humidity. Monstera plants are resilient and adaptable, with water-storing capabilities and an extensive root system. Hoyas are long-lasting plants with waxy leaves that can survive in lower humidity conditions. Aglaonema Siam Pink plants have unique patterns and are hard to kill, thriving in low-light environments. Pothos plants are excellent air purifiers and can tolerate various conditions, making them ideal for beginners.

Snake plants, known for their drought tolerance and ability to thrive in low light, are popular among plant parents. Baby rubber plants have semisucculent properties and can store moisture, making them easy to care for and propagate. Heart-leaf philodendrons, such as the Philodendron Brasil, have vibrant leaves and can grow long vines. It is important to provide these plants with the right amount of light, water, and care to ensure their health and longevity. Overwatering is the most common reason for houseplant death, so proper watering techniques and drainage are essential for plant health.

To prevent overwatering, experts recommend using pots with drainage holes and watering generously until water starts to trickle out the bottom. EasyPlant’s self-watering pot system is also a helpful solution to avoid overwatering. Additionally, providing adequate light is crucial for plant growth and well-being. Many tropical houseplants can adapt to low light conditions but still require a consistent light source. By selecting easy-to-care-for houseplants and following proper care guidelines, beginners can enjoy the benefits of adding greenery to their homes without the worry of causing harm to their plants.
