Apple has been accused by the DOJ of violating antitrust laws by using the iPhone to stifle competition. Despite this, the company has been making moves in the AI space, with reports of a partnership with Google to bring the search giant’s Gemini AI model to the iPhone. This could potentially drive gen AI into the mainstream, with speculations of Apple talking to other companies, such as OpenAI and Baidu, for their chatbot technology. Apple has also published a research paper on training large language models, revealing their work on developing new methods for AI systems.

In addition to its AI investments, Apple acquired a Canadian AI startup called DarwinAI earlier this year, which uses AI for visual inspections during the manufacturing process. Despite lagging behind rivals like Google and Microsoft in sharing details of its AI plans, Apple has already incorporated AI features into its products, such as the synthetic voice called Personal Voice and the computer vision tool Live Text. The company also updated its AutoCorrect feature to allow users to curse without being corrected to a milder word.

Microsoft has expanded the reach of its gen AI assistant Copilot, giving free users access to GPT-4 Turbo, the OpenAI model powering Copilot Pro. The company also hired the co-founder of DeepMind to run its new AI division, focused on advancing Copilot and other consumer AI products. Meanwhile, author Salman Rushdie experimented with AI tools like ChatGPT, concluding that they are not yet capable of replicating his writing style. Georgia, California, and Tennessee have introduced bills and laws to regulate the use of AI, such as banning deepfakes for political messaging and protecting musicians’ voices from unauthorized clones.

California’s Privacy Protection Agency proposed rules for businesses using AI and collecting personal information, while Tennessee passed the ELVIS Act to protect musicians from AI misuse. Companies like Splice and Soundful have used AI to create songs and beats, while controversial AI voice-cloning tools have mimicked superstar artists.
