The EU is offering 35,500 free rail passes to 18-year-olds as part of the DiscoverEU scheme, which aims to promote cultural connections in Europe. Eligible applicants must be born between January and December 2006 and legal residents of the EU, as well as certain associated countries. To apply, individuals must take an eligibility quiz on the European Youth Portal, answering questions about the EU and their travel plans. Applications are open until October 16 and winners will be selected based on their quiz responses. Those selected will receive a free rail pass for up to 30 days of travel between March 2025 and May 2026.

Successful applicants will have the option to either travel alone or with a group of up to five friends, with only the group leader required to answer the quiz questions. The travel pass can be used for one outbound and one inbound journey, including travel to at least one other eligible country. Passes are generally worth up to €283.26 in second or economy class, with the possibility of coach, ferry, or flight options for remote or overseas regions. A European Youth Card will also be provided, offering discounts across the EU. Young travellers are encouraged to become DiscoverEU Ambassadors, sharing their experiences through social media and presentations, and reporting back on their trip via an online survey.

Applicants will be selected based on the correctness of their quiz responses and availability within the budget. Each country has a quota of travel passes, with any remaining passes distributed to countries with higher application numbers. If necessary, a ‘first come, first served’ principle may be applied, with special support for participants with disabilities or health conditions. Successful applicants will be notified by email after the selection period ends in October and connected with an EU contractor for travel bookings. Passes purchased directly by applicants are not reimbursed.

The DiscoverEU scheme aims to connect young people with the heritage and history of Europe, fostering cultural understanding and relationships across the continent. The initiative encourages exploration, independence, and learning through travel experiences. By offering free rail passes, the EU hopes to provide young people with the opportunity to broaden their horizons, meet new people, and gain valuable skills and competencies. Participants are expected to share their experiences and insights with others, serving as ambassadors for the programme and promoting the benefits of cultural exchange and discovery.

Overall, the DiscoverEU programme offers a unique opportunity for 18-year-olds to explore Europe in an affordable and enriching way. By providing free rail passes and support for travel, the EU is empowering young people to experience different cultures, traditions, and landscapes throughout the continent. Through participation in the scheme, individuals can gain valuable skills, competencies, and insights that will contribute to their personal and professional development. The initiative not only benefits the participants themselves but also fosters greater unity, understanding, and cooperation within the EU and beyond.
