In the fall of 2022, Dr. William Dugal, a 32-year-old surgeon, contracted Covid-19 and began experiencing unusual symptoms, including numbness in his feet. This led to a diagnosis of Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare post-viral complication that can cause muscle weakness or complete paralysis. Dugal quickly became paralyzed and needed assistance to breathe and swallow, but remained mentally alert throughout the ordeal. The progression of Guillain-Barre syndrome varies, with some people making a full recovery and others experiencing long-term complications or even death.

After being diagnosed, Dugal realized the severity of his condition and faced the uncertainty of his prognosis. He was placed on a ventilator when his muscle weakness progressed to the point where he could no longer breathe on his own. At one point, he developed pneumonia and had both lungs collapse, leading to a near-death experience. Doctors put him on a machine called ECMO to give his lungs time to heal. Despite being completely dependent on medical intervention, Dugal maintained his mental clarity and even tried to communicate and manage his treatment.

Following his time on the ventilator, Dugal was transferred to a rehabilitation facility to begin the slow process of regaining his strength and mobility. Despite the challenges, he experienced incremental improvements that kept him motivated. Over two months of in-patient rehab, he worked on relearning basic tasks like eating and dressing himself. Eventually, he was able to walk again and began planning his return to work as a surgeon, using virtual reality training programs to practice his skills.

Nine months after his diagnosis, Dugal felt strong enough to return to work in a surgical lab. He then pursued an ECMO fellowship, putting patients on the same treatment that had saved him. This experience allowed him to work with the same healthcare professionals who had helped him through his own ordeal. Moving forward, he plans to start a general surgery fellowship, with a newfound sense of empathy and understanding for patients facing serious medical challenges. Dugal is grateful for the opportunity to care for others in a similar position and hopes to provide compassion and support to those in need.
