As a business leader, it can be easy to prioritize the needs of the company and team members over one’s own mental health. However, taking care of oneself is crucial not only for personal well-being but also for the success of the business. A group of Forbes Business Council members shared 20 ways in which leaders can prioritize their mental health, setting a positive example for their teams and reaping benefits in the long run. These suggestions ranged from starting the day with meditation or breathwork to scheduling time for tasks that improve physical health.

One common piece of advice was to establish a strong mindset, recognizing the importance of mental resilience in navigating the challenges of running a business. Additionally, knowing one’s boundaries and non-negotiables was emphasized, as well as the importance of disconnecting from work to recharge and gain perspective. Prioritizing social connection and engaging with peers were also recommended as ways to combat feelings of isolation and stress that can come with leadership roles.

Physical health was also highlighted as a key component of mental well-being, with suggestions to exercise regularly and prioritize activities that improve overall health. Communicating with a coach or therapist was mentioned as a valuable strategy for processing emotions and remaining focused amidst the demands of leadership. Aligning one’s schedule with their feelings, taking breaks to explore personal interests, and distinguishing between work and relaxation time were also suggested as ways to maintain mental clarity and prevent burnout.

Recognizing one’s limits as a leader and seeking support from fellow entrepreneurs were emphasized as important strategies for addressing mental health challenges. Building a mix of solutions, such as exercise, meditation, coaching, and therapy, was recommended as a way to adapt to changing needs and overcome daily challenges. Ultimately, prioritizing mental health as a business leader not only benefits the individual but also contributes to a healthier, more successful work environment for the entire team.
